Benny Cakes
This favorite local candy features the nutty flavor of sesame seeds, called "benny" with a hint of orange.

What You Need:
  • cups benny (sesame) seeds OR 1 cup benny & ˝ cup peanuts
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon orange peel, grated

  • How To Cook:
    1. Place benny seeds (and peanuts, if using) in a dry deep frying pan over medium heat, shaking and stirring constantly, until evenly browned.

    2. Combine sugar and water in a saucepan, adding water gradually as mixture comes to a boil.

    3. Add parched benny (and peanuts), stirring constantly with a wooden spoon to keep from burning.

    4. Simmer until mixture coats the spoon and is golden brown.

    5. Drop rounded tablespoonfuls onto a greased cooling pan or marble slab.

    6. Allow to set until cool and firm.

    To Make: about 1 pound
