  • ½ cup melted butter or margarine
  • ½ cup fine, dry breadcrumbs
  • 1/3 cup cherry brandy, rum, sauternes or orange juice
  • ¾ cup brown sugar

    2. Mix the crumbs, sugar and cinnamon.

    3. Put a layer of apples in a buttered ovenproof dish, then sprinkle with crumb mixture and add some melted butter.

    4. Repeat, finishing with crumbs, and pour the brandy or other liquid over the top.

    5. Bake in a moderately hot oven (400°F) for 25 - 30 minutes, or until the apples are cooked.
