This famous salad was invented by "Oscar of the Waldorf," Oscar M. Tschirky, maitre d'hotel at that famous New York hotel, during the early 1900s. The original recipe was a simple combination of equal parts of raw apples and celery moistened with mayonnaise and served on lettuce leaves. Later a number of other ingredients, notably chopped walnuts, were added to the original version. This combination is now the best known.
